Nashik tea-sellers become unlikely heroes battling indoor air pollution

NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Armed with clean energy biomass stoves, tea-sellers in Nashik are becoming unlikely heroes in the country's battle against indoor air pollution by not only using the wood-fuelled stoves for their trade but also selling them. The World Health Organization says 3 billion people globally cook using solid fuels such as charcoal and coal on open fires or traditional stoves, producing high levels of carbon monoxide, but it has been hard to switch people to clean energy. Kitchens in Sidlaghatta switch to healthier option with Agni Sakhi


Something new is cooking in the kitchens of Sidlaghatta, the heart of Karnataka's mulberry belt in Chikkaballapura, 70km from Bengaluru.
In a pilot, about 100 households have switched from traditional modes of cooking — using biomass and firewood in ill-ventilated kitchens — to a portable stove that requires less fuel that's easily available, and cooks faster.
